Write Standup Summaries with AI
Copy the raw standup thread — Slack messages, chat replies, your own scribbles — into @vustbot and ask for a summary grouped by person or by blocker. Out comes a scannable digest: who moved what, what's stuck, what needs a decision. No integrations read your channels; the paste is the pipeline.
Async standups generate text nobody reads twice: fifteen updates in fifteen formats, blockers buried mid-sentence. The summarization itself is pure text transformation — which means the fix costs one paste, not a new team tool.
What the AI does in this scenario
- Fifteen messy updates → one digest grouped how you choose
- Blockers hoisted to the top instead of buried in update #11
- "Needs decision" items separated from FYI noise
- Works on any text: Slack paste, Telegram thread, notebook scribbles
- Daily habit priced per action — no per-seat standup tool
Worked example: write standup summaries with ai
01Input — what you paste
raj: api pagination done, starting search endpoint. mia: still blocked on staging access, day 3!! did design review meanwhile. leo: bugfix sprint, 4 closed, one gnarly one left, might need raj an hour. sam: ooo till thu
02Output — what comes back
Standup digest (4 reports): BLOCKER — Mia: staging access, day 3 (escalate today). Needs coordination — Leo wants ~1h of Raj for a hard bug. Progress — Raj: pagination shipped, search endpoint next; Leo: 4 bugs closed; Mia: design review done while blocked. Out — Sam until Thu.
How to write standup summaries with ai — step by step
- 1Collect the raw updates
Select-all on the standup thread and copy — no cleanup needed. Typos, lowercase, emoji: the model reads through all of it. VUST doesn't connect to Slack; you bring the text.
- 2Pick the grouping that matches your job
By blocker if you're unblocking, by person if you're reporting up, by workstream if you're planning. Same paste, different lens — say which one in the prompt.
- 3Act on the top line
A good digest puts the escalation first. Handle the day-3 blocker before you file the summary — the format exists so that line stops getting lost.
AI vs doing it manually
Nobody advocates manually rewriting standup updates — the real alternative to AI here is not doing it: everyone skims the thread, each person catching a different 60%. The cost of that isn't visible daily; it shows up as the blocker that sat three days because it was phrased politely in message eleven. A model told to hoist blockers catches it on day one. The human contribution shifts from compiling to responding — which was supposed to be the manager's job anyway.
The prompt to copy
Summarize these standup updates into a digest. Order: 1) Blockers (with how many days blocked if stated), 2) Items needing a decision or another person's time, 3) Progress by person, one line each, 4) Out/absent. Keep names exactly as written. Flag anything blocked more than 2 days as ESCALATE. Updates: [PASTE THE THREAD]
Frequently asked questions
Can @vustbot read my Slack channel to build the standup summary?
No — there are no channel integrations, deliberately. You copy the thread and paste it into Telegram; only that pasted text is processed. Ten seconds more manual than a Slack bot, and in exchange nothing has standing access to your team's messages.
How does the AI decide what counts as a blocker in updates?
You define it in the prompt and it pattern-matches hard: explicit "blocked on", waiting-for phrasing, and stalled-for-days signals. The template here also escalates anything stuck over two days. The misses are cultural — someone saying "no worries, still poking at access" — so skim for politeness-masked blockers.
Is a daily AI standup digest worth it for a five-person team?
At five people you can read the raw thread — the digest earns its place when updates cross ~8, when reports feed upward to someone who wasn't in the thread, or when async time zones mean the thread completes overnight. Under that, use it weekly: summarize the whole week's thread every Friday instead.
