Not from a photo — and we won't pretend otherwise. A dedicated wine-label scanner (snap a bottle → grape, region, rating, pairing) isn't in VUST's lineup yet. @vustCalBot reads FOOD photos, not wine labels. What already works: @vustbot (general AI chat) will answer a typed wine question — 'what pairs with Barolo?' or 'is Grüner Veltliner sweet?' — or discuss a wine you name. The photo-label-scan flow is what doesn't exist. The waitlist button here is a real demand counter.

Honestly: Vivino's core is a crowd-rating database — ~70M users, millions of real tasting scores across ~16M wines, and it was the #4-grossing Food & Drink app in the US with roughly $400K/month revenue (Sensor Tower, Jun 2026). That average-of-real-drinkers rating on a specific vintage is Vivino's genuine moat and an LLM cannot fake it. A VUST tool would instead give you the reference layer — grape, region, style, tasting profile, food pairings — generated by a language model. Different job: knowledge and pairing on demand, not a crowd score.

Would the tasting notes and ratings be real?

The tasting notes and pairing suggestions would be genuine reference knowledge — grape characteristics, regional style, classic pairings — the kind of thing a wine book or a sommelier would tell you. But any 'rating' from a language model is generated, not a measured average of real drinkers. We'd label that plainly: no fake star counts, no invented '4.2 from 5,000 reviews.' For crowd scores on a specific bottle and vintage, a crowd-rating database is the right tool.

Why build it in Telegram instead of a separate app?

The whole VUST wedge is 'already in the chat you use, no new app, no signup.' A wine question tends to happen in a shop aisle or at a restaurant table — the moment you'd rather not install and register a new app. The intended shape is: forward a photo or type the name into @vustbot and get the read back in-chat. That's the vote this waitlist collects — whether it's worth building the dedicated photo-scan flow.

What could @vustbot help with right now, before the scanner exists?

Quite a lot, as long as you type rather than snap a label. Ask it what grape is in a wine you name, what a region's wines taste like, what to pour with a specific dish, how to read an unfamiliar appellation, or whether a style is dry or sweet — it answers as general AI chat, free tier, no card. The gap the waitlist is voting to close is the photo step: pointing your camera at a label and getting the grape/region/pairing back automatically.

Is a wine scanner useful if I'm not a wine expert?

That's exactly who it's for. Experienced drinkers already recognise producers and vintages; the person staring at an unfamiliar label with no idea where to start is the one who benefits from 'here's the grape, here's the style, here's what it goes with.' It's orientation for the everyday bottle-buying and menu-ordering decisions where a sommelier isn't standing next to you — not a replacement for one when you want a truly authoritative call.
