Is there a free Claude Code alternative?
Several, and they are free in two different senses. Aider, Cline and OpenCode are open source and free to install, but you connect your own model key and pay that provider for what you use. Gemini CLI and Cursor have free tiers with their own limits. @vustbot has a free tier inside Telegram with no card and nothing to install — it answers coding questions in chat rather than editing your repository.
Which alternative is closest to Claude Code itself?
Codex CLI and Aider, because they share the shape: a terminal agent that works inside your repository and edits files across a task. Cursor and Cline put the same idea inside an editor instead. It doesn't run agentically in your terminal, doesn't edit files in your repo, and doesn't execute multi-step tasks across your project. For that, use Claude Code. For pasting code and getting answers, use @vustbot.
Do I lose Claude Code's terminal and MCP access?
