Measure words are mandatory
Chinese requires measure words (量词) between numbers and nouns: 一本书 (one 'volume' book), 一条狗 (one 'strip' dog), 一台电脑 (one 'unit' computer). Using the wrong measure word is a clear non-native marker. DeepL selects the correct one from 100+ options.
No verb conjugation — but aspect matters
Chinese verbs don't conjugate for tense, person, or number. Instead, aspect particles (了 le, 过 guo, 着 zhe) and time words mark when and how an action happens. Translators must convert English tenses to the right particle system — not just drop all tense markers.
Simplified vs. Traditional characters
DeepL outputs Simplified Chinese (简体字), used in mainland China and Singapore. Traditional characters (繁體字), used in Taiwan and Hong Kong, are a different writing system — not just a font change. ~2,200 characters differ between the two systems.
Four-character idioms (chengyu)
Chinese uses thousands of four-character set phrases (成语) derived from classical literature. Good translations incorporate them naturally: 'killing two birds with one stone' → '一举两得' (one action, two gains). DeepL uses chengyu where a native speaker would.
