Translation tips

Definite article is a suffix

Unlike other Romance languages, Romanian attaches the definite article to the end of the noun: 'carte' (book) → 'cartea' (the book), 'om' (man) → 'omul' (the man). This postposed article system is shared with Bulgarian and Albanian, not with French or Spanish.

Five special characters — ă, â, î, ș, ț

Romanian uses five characters not found in other Romance languages: ă (schwa), â/î (central close vowel), ș (sh), ț (ts). Using 'a' for 'ă' or 's' for 'ș' is a spelling error that changes meaning.

Slavic vocabulary in a Romance grammar

Romanian is a Romance language with significant Slavic influence — about 20% of common vocabulary. Words like 'da' (yes), 'iubi' (to love), and 'prieten' (friend) are Slavic. The grammar, however, remains firmly Latin-based.

Three genders, not two

Romanian has masculine, feminine, and neuter genders. Neuter nouns behave as masculine in singular and feminine in plural: 'un scaun' (a chair, masculine form) but 'două scaune' (two chairs, feminine form). This three-way system is unique among Romance languages.

Did you know? Romanian is the closest living language to Latin. A Romanian speaker can understand simple Latin texts more easily than speakers of French, Spanish, or Italian — because Romanian preserved more Latin vocabulary and grammatical structures, including the case system.
