Translation tips

En/ett gender — no shortcuts

Swedish nouns are either en-words (common) or ett-words (neuter): 'en bok' (a book) vs 'ett hus' (a house). About 75% are en-words, but you must memorize each. The gender cascades to articles, adjectives, and pronouns. DeepL assigns the correct gender consistently.

Definite article is a suffix, not a word

Unlike English 'the', Swedish attaches the definite article to the end: 'bok' (book) → 'boken' (the book), 'hus' → 'huset'. With adjectives, a free-standing article ALSO appears: 'det stora huset' (the big house). This double-definite system is unique to Scandinavian languages.

Compound words — always one word

Swedish compounds like 'barnsjukhus' (children's hospital), 'trädgårdsmästare' (gardener), 'sjukvårdsförsäkring' (health insurance) are single words. Splitting them is called 'särskrivning' — the most-mocked grammar error among Swedes. DeepL keeps compounds correctly joined.

Å, Ä, Ö are separate letters

Swedish has 29 letters — Å, Ä, and Ö are not accented versions of A and O but distinct letters at the end of the alphabet. 'Ö' means 'island', 'Å' means 'stream'. Substituting 'o' for 'ö' changes meaning entirely. DeepL produces all Swedish characters correctly.

Did you know? Swedish has a unique word — 'lagom' — meaning 'just the right amount, not too much, not too little.' There's no direct translation in any other language, and Swedes consider it a core cultural concept.
