Translation tips
Ukrainian ≠ Russian — distinct vocabulary
Ukrainian has thousands of words with no Russian equivalent: 'гарний' (beautiful, RU: красивый), 'мрія' (dream, RU: мечта), 'ґанок' (porch, RU: крыльцо). Translators that route through Russian lose these distinctions. DeepL translates directly to Ukrainian.
Seven cases including vocative
Ukrainian actively uses the vocative case for direct address: 'Тарас' → 'Тарасе!', 'друг' → 'друже!'. Russian has essentially lost this case, but in Ukrainian it's mandatory in speech and writing. DeepL applies it correctly.
The letter Ґ — uniquely Ukrainian
Ukrainian has Ґ (hard g), distinct from Г (h-sound). 'Ґанок' (porch) vs 'Ганок' (wrong). This letter was suppressed during Soviet rule and restored in 1990. Its correct usage is a marker of proper Ukrainian. DeepL uses it where standard orthography requires.
Future tense has synthetic forms
Ukrainian forms future tense synthetically for imperfective verbs: 'писатиму' (I will be writing) — a single word, unlike Russian's two-word 'буду писать'. This compact form is a distinguishing feature of Ukrainian grammar that marks text as authentically Ukrainian.
Did you know? Ukrainian is the third most spoken Slavic language with 45 million speakers. It uses the Cyrillic alphabet with four unique letters not found in Russian: Ґ, Є, І, Ї.
