An Ad Beside an AI Answer Is Not the Answer Itself

First identify the label and separate the ad unit from the response. Then verify the specific recommendation against primary sources. VUST can help compare facts and reasoning, but it does not automatically detect hidden sponsorship.

OpenAI's current test separates the ad from the response

OpenAI's official help page describes ads below the response with a separate sponsored label; it says advertisers cannot alter or rank the response text. The ad policy was updated 15 July 2026. We treat this as the operator's stated product behavior, not proof that every placement is error-free.

This page does not assume that every unlabeled recommendation is neutral.

Manual verification workflow

  1. 1. Record the interface: Look for a separate sponsored label, advertiser identity, and an explanation control. Do not call an ordinary answer an ad merely because it names a brand.
  2. 2. Extract the checkable claim: Write down the exact recommendation, price, feature, limit, or selection reason. Verify the claim rather than the confident tone.
  3. 3. Open independent sources: Check current features, terms, and alternatives through VUST Search or primary documentation. An ad card is not evidence for the product claim.
  4. 4. Review the reasoning separately: Council can compare criteria and surface model disagreement. Model agreement does not prove that a recommendation is commercially independent or correct.

Best for
Buying advice and comparisons where the source and selection criteria matter.
Not ideal for
Proving hidden commercial relationships or making a legal advertising determination.
In short
Separate the labeled ad from the response, then verify the recommendation independently.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT place ads inside the answer itself?

OpenAI's current help page says test ads appear below the response, carry a sponsored label, and run separately from the answer model. That is the operator's published product statement, not an independent audit of every placement.

Can VUST automatically detect hidden sponsorship?

No. VUST has no hidden-sponsorship scanner. Search can check product claims against openable sources, and Council can compare reasoning and expose disagreement; neither establishes a platform's commercial relationships.

If three models recommend the same option, is it independent?

Not necessarily. Models may rely on the same public material, brand popularity, or missing context. Agreement is a signal to inspect, not proof.

What should I do with a suspicious recommendation?

Separate the ad unit from the response, list the selection criteria, verify factual claims in primary sources, and compare at least one named alternative. Use a qualified professional for consequential financial, medical, or legal decisions.
